icDirectory: Renesas acquires Transphorm to expand its power supply lineup with GaN technology


As per icDirectory Limited, Renesas announced on January 11 that it will acquire Transphorm, a supplier of gallium nitride (GaN) power semiconductors, for $5.1 per share in cash, with a total valuation of approximately $339 million. The acquisition will provide Renesas with GaN's in-house technology, expanding its footprint in fast-growing markets such as electric vehicles, computing (data centers, AI, infrastructure), renewable energy, industrial power supplies, and fast chargers/adapters.


As the cornerstone of carbon neutrality, the demand for efficient power systems is increasing, and related industries are transitioning to wide bandgap (WBG) materials represented by silicon carbide (SiC) and GaN. These advanced materials have a wider range of voltages and switching frequencies than traditional silicon-based devices. In response to this momentum, Renesas has announced the establishment of an in-house SiC production line and signed a 10-year SiC wafer supply agreement.
