icDirectory: STMicroelectronics announces the availability of SiC MOSFET technology to Zinsight



 On January 18, ST announced that it has partnered with Silicon Carbide (SiC) semiconductor power module manufacturer Zinsight Technology to provide ST's third-generation SiC MOSFET technology for Zinsight's on-board air conditioning compressor controller for electric vehicles. It is said that the air conditioning compressor controller using this SiC MOSFET technology will help extend the range of new energy vehicles, and the effect will be more significant in summer and winter.


According to reports, the controller of the electric vehicle air conditioning compressor of Zinsight Technology selects ST's third-generation 1200V SiC MOSFET technology, combined with Zinsight Technology's unique heat dissipation solution and thermal protection design, which can improve the thermal management energy efficiency of electric vehicles, improve the NVH performance of air conditioning compressors, and promote the miniaturization of electric compressor systems. Under the condition of ensuring the same cruising range in summer and winter, this solution can help OEMs save the total system cost of a single vehicle.


It is reported that Zinsight Technology will be able to mature and mass-produce air conditioning compressor controllers based on SiC solutions on the 400V, 800V, and 1000V platforms of new energy vehicles, and will be shipped in batches by the end of 2023. Li Auto's upcoming 800V high-voltage pure electric platform will use ST's third-generation 1200V SiC MOSFET technology in the electric drive inverter, which will help enhance product competitiveness due to the outstanding process stability, performance, energy efficiency and reliability.


ST's SiC technology is now widely used in EV on-board charging, electric drive inverters and DC-DC converters (DC-DC). In cooperation with Zinsight, ST has achieved the industry's first design innovation for electric vehicle air conditioning compressor controllers based on SiC technology, further broadening the application range of automotive-grade SiC products.


Focusing on automotive SiC power devices, ST has carried out extensive cooperation with many well-known manufacturers, and the SiC circle of friends is continuing to expand. At the same time, ST is also continuing to invest in SiC wafer fabs, expand production capacity, and continuously improve the level of SiC technology. With the increasing scale of the domestic new energy vehicle market and the rising demand for SiC power devices, ST is likely to join hands with more domestic manufacturers in the future to further deepen the layout of the Chinese market.


Although Zinsight is a start-up company founded in August 2019, it already has certain strength in the SiC field, and the company has launched the SiCTeX series of SiC advanced electric drive systems and ZiPACK high-performance SiC power modules, which have been massively used in new energy vehicles, hydrogen fuel cell systems, on-board electric air conditioning compressor drives, industrial drives and other fields. Together with ST and with the support of advanced SiC technology, the development of Zinsight SiC business will be smoother.
